Mack's Surgery on Oct. 6, 2010

Wednesday, October 6, 2010, Mack finally had the long awaited surgery to release the athrapy(sp) that set into his feet, legs, hips and left arm. It was done in New Jersey at Cooper University Medical Center by Dr. David Fuller. Mack came through the surgery very well and the doctor feels that he was successful because he got Mack to almost straighten out his legs and arm while he was under anesthesia. Dr. Fuller was very concerned about Mack's left hand tissue because Mack has had his hand clenched for so long, not allowing air to get to the skin or cleaning of the hand. We have tried many times to open his hand enough to get a soapy washcloth into his hand one finger at a time and he has fought us all the way. Last Monday, it was impossible for me to clean it before he left the nursing home for surgery. He wanted to bite me, hollering and carrying on the entire time I tired to clean his hand. After 20 minutes of trying, I finally gave up.

As of this afternoon (Friday), Dr. Fuller said that Mack will be transferred to Moss Rehab Center in Pennsylvania, across the river from Cooper University. There, Mack will receive about two weeks of intensive physical therapy each day, with the goal being that Mack can get himself into and out of bed and into his wheelchair, roll himself to the bathroom and then move himself onto the toilet and back into the wheelchair, and get himself back into bed when he wants to. Richard will return home during this time and go back to pick Mack up when he is released. As far as we know right now, Mack will be returning to Dinwiddie Health and Rehab to continue his physical therapy and living arrangements.

Please keep Mack in your prayers asking that God will give him the strength he needs to get through physical therapy and a determination to make this surgery successful for him, giving him the freedom to move about and restore his dignity to him.

I'll post pictures once Richard returns from Pennsylvania this weekend with his camera.

Thanks to everyone for your kindness and support,
Ruth and Richard
and MACK!
